| Residency permitMy wife and I are pensioners looking into the possibility of retiring in Uruguay. The problem is that we have to have minimum pension income of $1,500 per month, but no uruguayan consulates are able to tell us whether that is for each person or whether $1,500 will be enough to cover both of us. Can anyone out there let us have a definite answer based on experience? Many thanks.Michael |
| Unless things have changed in the last couple years, you need $500 a month per person to get a retirement (residency no work allowed) visa. |
| Best I can tell to quality for residency you have to have unearned income. Once you have residency you can work. The income requirements are for the family. |
| Hello all, I hope the following link can help: Please let me know. |
| Here's the link to Javier's website about residency: |
| Thanks Linda! These are the rules about income: Persons who live off interest/rents, retirees and pensioners in foreign countries must present a notary public certification indicating their status and monthly incomes he/she will receive in Uruguay (minimum required United States dollars 1.500, 00/one thousand five hundred). In the following link (I hope it shows up this time) you can also find law 16.340 which provides special benefits for retirees. Please notice that in order to apply for this benefits you must have permanent residence already. Mostly, the benefits are entering a car to the country and qualify for a Uruguayan passport. |
| Most of the benefits in 16.340 have been taken away. You can NOT bring a car, (or a moto or any other motorized vehicle), any more. Used vehicles/motos/buses, etc. are prohibited. |
| Why is everyone so obsessed with cars... it is wonderful not to worry about the cost, maintainence, parking, acciddents, driving or anything else. |
| Residency is too easy.. why does everyone need to fret about it so much. I think the problem may be that you need to learn a bit more Spanish as non of the information available directly from immigration is in English. |
| @Linda residency has some traps and the migrations is not kidding. |
| Hi Ya'll! (Texas term for everybody0. I am an athletic, healthy 74 year old single male who has been there and done that almost all over this World. But I haven't been to Uraguy yet. tonight is my first stop in Uraguy, so there is much that I need to learn before visiting in person. Right now I live in Brownsville, Texas, USA and have a few houses, boats and condo's (all on the ocean, bays, or rivers. If Uraguy turns out to be a great place to live, I would consider swapping one of my fully furnished places here in Texas for one of your places in Uraguy for a month or two. If anyone is interested, let me know and let's talk. Doug uscbdoug@earthlink.net Phone USA area code plus 956--371-3774 Cell. |
| Well, there Doug hope you enjoy "Uraguy" wait a minute, let me look at what places and sites to see in "Uraguy". **Types in "Uraguy" in Google** Dang mahn! I didn't see a place with Uraguy in it, maybe in Yahoo. **Types in "Uraguy" in Yahoo** Mahn! still no sign, are you sure you are not going to an imaginary Island? Hahaha of course there is no place such as Uraguy, you dimwit! Well, its a good thing they don't speak English much there in "Uruguay"!!! You'll blend perfectly in hahaha |
| Not everyone is a good speller.. or good typist... the important thing is that he was able to find this website, even with the wrong spelling and communicate his message. After he becomes more familiar with Uruguay, I'm sure he'll learn the correct spelling. Google has a lot about Urugay too... Results 1 - 100 of about 5, 720 for Uraguy.. and a lot of it is stuff about Uruguay... so lighten up a bit. |

| Hi Gina, I'm Uruguayan, I speak english, and I have a very special gift: I can smell unpolite comments from far distances. I also can smell intolerance. Sorry I have to leave but I just can't go on with this smell żDo you have any idea about where does it come from? |
| Well.. that is the beauty and curse of forums.... some people bring their bad attitude and anger out in the forums.... others just share what can be tremendously interesting and/or useful information. And, in some cases the only difference might be your point of view! Maybe now we can get back to talking about Immigration and Residency! |

| this is what i got from the net Residency Visa Any foreign visitor can apply for a residency visa and should apply to the immigration office in his or her country of residence. In general terms, the requirements are: owning a property in the country and/or a bank account with adequate funds, having a clean police record in the country of residency, and having proof of income in Uruguay or a work permit. All documents will have to be authenticated by a public notary. Any person visiting Uruguay for business purposes can go to the consulate or embassy of the country. |
Comment #1909/21/09 22:13Rural east Colonia departmento | Colour me unsurprised... I fear internationalliving is partly wrong.First, you have to be here in the ROU to apply for residency. You will need most of your documents stamped by a Uru-consul in your country of origin but applications for residency happen here. There is a good up to date immigration FAQ somewhere on this site. Sad to say a well filled bank account, a posh house or rolling acres of fertile farmland doesn't seem to impress our immigration funcionarios one little bit.... but proof of 500 U$S/month or more from an acceptable source does :-) |
| The link Patrick is referring to is below....but in our free ebook you'll find all the necessary info about filing for residency and how the application process works (and doesn't work!). Just click on "free ebook" in the menu bar to read more articles. |

Hi Everyone --If you would like help with the residency process (appointment setting, interpretation, etc), contact my roommate via her website: www.uruguayhelp.com |
| "Proof of Income"
In Thailand proof of income is needed for a Retirement visa and there is a form available at U.S. consulates in which you declare and state what your income is and the consulate will notarize the form for a fee. There is no proof from the pension issuing agency. Is this the way it is done in Uruguay?Bob |
Comment #2311/20/09 11:57Rural east Colonia departmento | "Proof of income"
I presented immigration with a translated and certified copy of a tenancy agreement on a rented house in England showing a monthly income of more than 500 U$S which satisfied them. They wanted to see the source of the 500 U$S income and details of the bank account where it arrived in the ROU each month. They did not want to know details of any other income... just the 500 U$S. As most of my income was in sterling and changing into U$S/sending small amounts was expensive I tried my best to find a way around the problem... but failed. Its much cheaper to send a large amount occasionally rather than small amounts monthly but the funcionarios weren't satisfied with such a plan. The only upside was that there was no need to continue the farce once the cedula was granted |
| Hey, man. So many people interested in getting you settled in Uruguay having a good time. The link I provide will go a long way toward providing good solution tom your problems. Actually, nothing like the nearest consulate for this type of information. Uruguay is a great country that actually appreciates people, expats, etc. coming to settle there. They will do their utmost to take care of things. Good luck! |
