Looking for relocation information...

Thank author of this post/commentI am looking for relocation information to Uruguay from the United States. I am a current property manager in Las Vegas Nevada where I have managed apartments and motels. I hope to relocate with my family (wife and 3 children)there and wanted to continue to find out as much information on how to gain legal citizenship status. I am looking into owning and operating my own motel/hotel outside of the city and preferably more rural and close to the ocean, if not on. I am interested in building and all aspects of property management.

In the USA a Motel is a place where you can park your car directly outside your "hotel room".

In Latin America, a Motel is a little different, and the top isn't appropriate for this forum, but in general it is like a hotel room with a garage. You drive your car into the garage and the manager shuts the door (can you say privacy?) then you go to your "hotel room". You wouldn't find these motels to be family friend, and the rooms are usually occupied for just an hour or two.

Keeping the different in mind can save a bit of embarrassment when you ask someone where the nearest place to stay is.

How for investments... a motel could be a good business.

I always like casual bed and breakfasts. A comfortable place that offers private rooms (unlike hostels) and a social environment not found in hotels. It seems the environment and having a large table for everyone to sit at for breakfast opens people up socially.

Hostels seem to becoming more popular in Uruguay, but bed and breakfasts are few and far between. The Uruguayans don't seem to understand them.

Also, keep in mind that along the beach, the tourist season is quite short. So to be viable you need to plan on doing all your business a few months of the year and/or developing something interesting year round, like a "spiritual retreat".

Why are you looking for citizenship status? It is fairly easy to become a legal resident, which allows you to stay forever. Though you can purchase property, businesses, etc as a tourist.

Thank author of this post/comment"Best of luck."

In my view, Uruguay is one of the world's most difficult places for a foreigner to start and run a new business.

On the other hand there are no functioning places to stay on Ruta 1 between MVD and Colonia though there is a small abandoned hotel-ette at the Ruta 3 junction. With all the new assembly plants springing up between km 30 and km 45 (around Colonia Wilson) it might be worth some further investigation.

Thank author of this post/comment"On the Ocean"

When you say "on the ocean" do you mean actually on the ocean (salt water) or just "on the shore"? Most of the Uruguayan coastline is actually on the river, not the ocean. And the part on the actual ocean (Punta del Este north the the border with Brazil, if you are looking at a map) is not heavily touristed. Patrick's locations (above) are on the river.

To see what's on hotel-wise, pick up the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet or Bradt's book about Uruguay. That will give you an idea of where the hotels are, what they charge, and so on.

Thank author of this post/comment"thanks for the replies"

Thank you very much for responding..I wasnt so sure that anyone would respond, let alone that quick. The reason I was looking for citizenship was I wanted to live in a country that wasnt so actively engaged into going to war all the time and yes, while I should do some visiting and stay for awhile to see if I like it having not been there before, Im still really unhappy living in the states anymore and the politics that is being played out. I mostly like rural areas, but love the fact that Uruguay has casinos and horse tracks, maintain a small army and I was trying to determine how stable the Uruguayan monetary system was. I currently homeschool my children here in the USA..and I may want to continue to do so..I just dont like the public school system and the way children are raised today by their parents...or should I say lack of raising.

Thank you very much for the info on motels in URUGUAY and I will make sure not to ask for that, although my teenage son seemed to smile at the idea...

I did mean coastline..I live in the desert in Las Vegas..any type of water here looks like an ocean sometime. lol. but I might be more interested in that hotel that was listed there..I will do some more checking...thank you again to all for responding with good information.

Billy

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 164950825
