| Looking for an appartment to rent Hello everyone, My name is Christine. I´m 26, German/U.S.-American and I have moved to Mvd last December for my first job. Up til now I really like Uruguay and I am planning on staying at least about 1, 5 years longer... I would really love to live by myself (right now I´m sharing a flat with to spanish girls)...but rents here are just insanely high (I don´t understand how Uruguayans can afford life here)....:-( I get a good - Uruguayan! - salary, so I cannot pay as much as a regular Expat...if anybody knows of some appartment preferibly in Parque Rodó or Cordón (Pocitos or Punta Carretas would also be ok...but rents there are even more expensive) and can give me a tipp, I´d VERY MUCH appreciate it! Thanks a lot in advance! :) Cheers, Christine |
| "apartment for rent"
Christine, I was in the same situation 3 weeks ago for an apartment. Parque Rodó or Cordón are nice however finding an apartment in Rodó is not easy as people are not moving a lot from this area (Rodó is more ''oriented'' casas instead of apartment/buildings). Cordón is a little bit better but you should check between Avenida de 18 of Julio down to Parque Rodó. I am not aware about your situation but I was looking for a furnished apartment as I will see my situation after one year in Montevideo. Furnished apartments are the most located in Pocitos, Punta Carretas (close to nonexistent in Parque Rodó). Be aware that the process could be long but not impossible! The rents in Pocitos or Punta Carretas are expensive but Parque Rodó is not far. Cordón is not bad in rent however everything is depending on the location, the condition of the apartment, the owner and the agency. Also, don't forget about the guaranty as most of the owners ask for a type of guaranty (deposit, life insurance, collateral, etc). As well, you should use your relations (work, friend) as a lot of apartments are not advertised in the agencies or the newspapers. Word of mouth is working very well in Montevideo! Personally, I have a preference for Parque Rodó however I found my ''future'' apartment in Pocitos...I did myself all the research of the apartments and the agencies. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions Jean-Francois |

Whether we can "understand how Uruguayans can afford life here" or not, rents are what they are. And, in general properties don't have special gringo rents. One of most frustrating experiences with rents was twice, in two different properties with two different owners, asked for 30% and 35% rent increases when the 2-year contracts were finished. | "alquileres..."
Hello everyone, thank you all very much for your feedback. I probably shoud have said it before: the max I could spend for a monoambiente per month would be 700 "todo incluido"...with this budget I can probably just forget ir, right?:( I´m now considering trying to find an unfurnished flat and buying furniture myself...but also unfurnished, the prices are high...ahhh...why is mvd so expensive???? It looks like I have to keep sharing flats after all...:( After having shared for more than 8 years, I am really really sick of it... If anyone else has other advice, please let me know!!! :) Take care, Christine |

Hi Christine:Indeed rentals have increased enormously this year, probably due to inflation and lack of apartment availabilities. The dollar price is falling even more, so it's getting even more expensive in that currency. Me and my wife own an apartment in Parque Battle, 2 blocks away from Pocitos currently available. It's actually just a bit over the budget you quote but there's no loss in checking it out and see if we can work something out... I believe all details appear in my profile, but if not, just write back. Best regards Eze |
