Learning how to drive a stick shift
| Learning how to drive a stick shift Since I've been unable --so far-- to find a driving school in Norwalk, CT that will teach me how to drive a stick shift... I've decided to enroll in a local driving school in Montevideo as soon as I arrive there in early July. I did some researching online at Mercadolibre and I found a driving school called "Academia Spark" which is based in the neighborhood of Sayago. They claim that for $5000 (uruguayan pesos) they will teach me how to drive a stick shift in 15 days AND they will do the paperwork with city hall so I can get my driver's license, after I pass the test. They provide the car and they come pick you up right at your doorstep. They said all I need is a valid Uruguayan ID and a medical certificate. The cost of the driver's license and medical certificate is in addition to the $5000 and is $719 and $420. I wonder if anyone knows of any other driving schools that they can recommend. When I am in Uruguay I live in Pocitos so a driving school nearby would be great. |

When someone I know was going to drive schools here there seems to be one on almost every corner... or at least signs with a phone number for them.I think since you are an experienced driver and native Spanish speaker it will be very easy for you. Learning some of the regulations here and driving a stick. I can't imagine you can't find a friend in NY or CT with a stick you can get up to speed on. That should be really easy! I think the 15 day course is for people that have never been in the drivers seat... so I'd try to learn how to drive a stick in the USA and then see if you can get a crash course (hahaha) in the regs here for a lot less time and money. I've driven once in the past 7 years... so I am probably not much help for anything driving related! |

Dan - I was in the same predicament that you are, not too long ago.I leased for my Moving Business a Pick-up truck and decided to get the one with the extra pedal.I asked my Driver to pick it up for me and bring it home, after that I took him for a drive. Whoa he still remember that ride. I'm driving (automatic) for a long time and I drove a little in Uruguay a long time ago. My advice to you is go to a Big Parking lot on Sunday morning and practice. It's all in the speed. I live in Florida if you want to take a vacation before you go to Uruguay I will teach you. The other solution would be, like Lee dont drive just dont follow the Crash Course advice (that was funny)- Also if you are Renting I believe that now you can get Automatic. Good luck |

Thank you Jorge. I finally found a school in a town near where I live willing to teach me how to drive a stick shift. There was a little problem though...they wanted $110 per hour!!! I'm starting to think I have no choice...I'll have to take that 15 day course in MVD when I get there in July. Of course, I know I need a lot more than a crash course. I know me... and I know Montevideo is not NYC. Drivers don't respect the rules of the road. It can be scary...even as a passenger in a cab!! About renting an automatic...they charge $100 a day in Uruguay, opposite $25 if you rent a stick shift... |
| "Enjoy Uruguay and the driving -"
Good - Enjoy your stay in Uruguay - A long time ago I was a Taxi Driver on NYC in the Weekends and I remember driving in the City was no joke. The good thing was that everybody respected the Yellow Car and the Strets had lines.100.00 Dollars a day for an Automatic, Those are the things that we take for granted in the USA and that we miss when we're not here. |
