Importing vehicles

Thank author of this post/commentI know that one cannot import a used vehicle to Uruguay unless citizenship is granted, but what about buying a new vehicle and importing it. The vehicle would betitled and licensed for the first time in Uruguay. This would only seem reasonable if the vehicle one is importing has no dealership for that particular make and/or model. Does anyone know how that works or know of anyone who does that would bewilling to advise me.

Thanks

Terry

Not even an ROU citizen can import a used vehicle unless he fits the definition of a returning uruguayo, can prove that he has been living in the country from which he is returning for more than 2 years and has owned the vehicle in his own name in that country for more than 2 years. Worse still, he isn't allowed to sell it for some time (I forget how long.)

New imports can be done but after the customs have taxed it, I suspect it would cost you the same or more than buying a similar vehicle here.

The other difficulty is in obtaining spare parts for a particular make and model of vehicle which is not available in the ROU... not just the physical delay but also the bureaucratic agro involved in paying import duty on said parts.

Thank author of this post/comment"Cars: Importing v Buying in Uruguay"

Whatever way you look at it - cars are expensive in Uruguay. You either cannot import one, or if you can find a way around that (unlikely) you will pay through the nose for it because import taxes are so high and they value it at what it is valued here.

On the other hand, buying a used car here comes with plenty of caveats too. Its not such an easy process like it is in the US or most place in Europe. There is a lot of paperwork and handing over processes and you'll need to hire an escribano (notary public).

Here is an article one expat wrote about his experiences buying used and new cars in Uruguay:

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 401592642
