How to get the cheapest ticket to Uruguay -

Thank author of this post/commentI'm not a Travel Agent but what I learned about buying tickets is that if you are going to Uruguay or Japan you buy Tickets from a Travel Agent that concentrates on that area or Country. Because they get the best deals with the Airlines.

The Airline tell their Agents - If you sell more than a Million Dollars we will give you 25%, Under the Million 15%. So the Travel Agent will give you discounts to get over the Million.

Plain and simple you need to find the Wholesaler to Uruguay or Japan or where ever you are traveling.

The worst thing to do would be to call the Airline or use only one Travel Agent.

On a Cruise I met a Travel Agent at Dinner and she told me that I was absolutely right.

Thank author of this post/comment"Buying flights online"

When I was moving to Uruguay I went to 4 or 5 travel agencies in Dublin that specialized in South America travel. Their prices seemed pretty high so I scoured online and found a cheaper one. I asked them to match the price and they said they could not compete with online prices so I bought online.

The same thing here in Uruguay when I was organizing a flight back to Ireland, and again this month as I am organizing MANY flights in and between Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. Again all the flights they offered me could be bought cheaper online.

Travel agents are becoming somewhat redundant as they are no longer "necessary". Travel agents are only worth it if they provide excellent customer service and take all the hassle out of booking flights because otherwise you can almost always find a better deal online (and you don't know to pay commissions that way).

I use this site for price comparisons:

I reckon you're right.

If you buy on-line by starting from a price comparison site, you'll usually get a better price than by going on-line direct to an airline or ticket seller. The same rule applies when renting a car.

Having said that, Myrna (my local travel agent/radio station/florist lady in Nueva Helvecia) can get me cheaper ferry tickets Colonia - Buenos Aires than I can find on line. I suspect she has friends in low places :-)

If it's half the price definitely friends in low places, if it's only a little bit but cheaper that is my point.

My last trip to Uruguay(online) my last Cruise (Travel Agent) same price more upgrades and a Bottle of cheap Champagne.

Can Mirna's Radio station be heard in Argentina ?

Years ago I helped to purchase an Antenna in the United States for a Radio Station in Colonia trying to get to Buenos Aires.

Her FM radio station reaches most of east Colonia depto but not much more.

She seems to do about 10% better than I can on-line with ferry tickets but I think local agents get special promotional discounts which are unavailable to on-line bookers. Usually at least one of the legs does not include Buquebus but uses a cheaper ferry instead.

Atlanta GA,
Thank author of this post/comment"Buying Airline Tickets"

I started looking at fares from Atlanta to MVD about two months ago. I looked at a variety of travel search engines, travel agents and airlines. I have not found any airline that flies non stop from Atlanta to MVD....the closest i found was American Airlines from Miami. Some of my observations regarding the purchase of tickets are as follows-

Air fares can and do vary considerably.

a)The closer you get to your anticipated departure date the higher they can get.

b)Fares may vary depending on the day of the week, the departure time of each leg and the length of the layover(where one may have to make connecting flights)

c)Last week i decided on my itinerary which included flying Atlanta-Miami-MVD on my outward leg and Atlanta-Miami-Buenos Aires-MVD for the return with American Airlines. I found that as days passed, the price of the main leg (MIA-MVD or MIA-EZE) changed almost daily.....one day a price would be up sometimes by as much as US$150.00 and then come down maybe by US$100.00.

d)Some airlines charge extra for booking by phone.

e)About 95% of the searches i did online directly with an airline were cheaper than a search engine or travel agent. Those that were cheaper with places like Travelocity invariably entailed traveling at very odd hours or with very long layovers.

f)Direct flights are generally more expensive than those that entail a change.

Just two days ago an agent confirmed that these days the travel agents are not paid any commissions....he added between $50 to$100 for each straight forward ticket he wrote. On the other hand consolidators buy blocks of seats on various flights directly from an airline (probably at a discount) but they take the risk of holding unsold seats.

I think the bottom line is that if you have the time to do the leg work, are flexible with travel days and times, layovers etc. you can get a good deal. The travel agent is still very useful for multi stop journeys where there can be all sorts of airline/IATA rules and regulations. Don't forget to check the seat width and seat spacing on various airlines.....some like to pack you in like sardines for the sake of a few more dollars!!!!
