Homeschooling

We're at the very early stages of investigating leaving the US. Can anyone tell me if homeschooling is allowed in Uruguay?

Hi,

legally homeschooling is not allowed in Uruguay. By Law kids have to attend school.

I know of several expats who are asking about this matter. It is their own responsability if they do homeschooling.

Regards,

Peter Stross

Thanks for the help. What do you mean by "It is their own responsability if they do homeschooling"? Does that mean it can be done but they will receive no assistance from the government? Or they're subject to sanction? Not sure I understand. Thanks.

Hi,

by Uruguayan Law kids MUST attend school and this is the parents responsibility. So if something happens there could be a kind of sanction.

What do you mean by sanctions? Does that mean the fithy goverment will take you kids away from thier parents?

Ben

PS: I plan to buy land soon in Uruguay and this subject concerns me because I also home school in the US.

Thank author of this post/commentDon't you think homeschool kids in Uruguay would leave your kids really isolated and non-fluent in the language?

If you believe certain religious or other aspects are missing from the regular schools, surely spend sometime on those topics at home. But, remember the schools will be a big place your kids will integrate into the society, make friends and learn the language.

First a judge would "suggest" to send your kids to school. It would be the sort of suggestion, you wouldn't dare to pass by on the risk that real sanctions could be taken.

On the other hand, Linda is right. It would be most beneficious for the kids to socialize and have local friends. Mostly this only can happen through the visit of a school, as otherwise they wouldn't have contact to other kids of their age.

This will also help your integration to local society. If you buy land you will not have many neighbors and the few you would have, can help you out with lots of things.

I'm also seriously contemplating a move to UY, most likely in 2010. I have a daughter who will be 6 at that time and I worry she'll fall behind in school due to the language barrier. Are there any private schools that offer a Spanish/English curriculum where she would be able to come up to speed in Spanish before attending public schools? We'd like to live in rural MVD or Canelones.

Hi Eric,

in Montevideo you have plenty of English-Spanish schools.

In Canelones you have a few, mostly located in Costa de Oro.

Thank author of this post/comment"Legal ?"

I've read a few sites where people say homeschooling is illegal in Uruguay, but I've found this (seemingly credible) website which states that homeschooling is legal here. I've yet to find the sources of what they claim...
