| Health Care In UruguayIn another message Adrian asked:2. I would like to know about health care in Uruguay. What about pre-existing medical problems? Are there any government health insurance plans that will cover such conditions? What about public health care in Uruguay (quality, cost)? The health care in Uruguay is basically private. The ministry of public health and the military offer public health services. Insead of "health insurance" one buys a membership with the hospital of their choice. The price will vary depending on your ages, etc, but I think you will often find it to run in the $50-$60/month range. You don't have to obtain residency to become a member. "Hospital Britanico" (The British Hospital) is considering on of the best and more popular with English speaking "residents". The question about pre existing conditions is always tough, but I think you'll find the British Hospital will answer emails promptly (in English). You will have to submit to some degree of testing before they accept your membership (blood tests, dr interview, maybe more). |
| Basically private but there are still public hospitals, right? Because what if an accident (and there are sure a lot of them) occurs so how can that person, (probably a tourist) not knowing about the health care services of Uruguay be saved? Just thinking out loud, I already knew about the answers or response to this. Just bitchin off hahaha |
| No private Health Care or Insurance will accept pre existing medical problems. By the new Health Law since January 2nd, 2008 all residents are covered by a combined medical Health System. Not included in this system are private Health Insurances (Bluecross, Summum, MP, etc.) and the British Hospital. |
Comment #303/12/09 11:08Rural east Colonia departmento | When I first moved in the ROU 2 years ago I subscribed to CAMEC, my local health mutual. I was examined by two doctors looking for pre-existing conditions and having satisfied them, paid a monthly subscription of just over 1100 pesos/month.I also pay BPS (national insurance contributions) by virtue of being a small farmer. When the law was changed last year, my escribana transformed me from being a small farmer into a unipersonal small farmer which means that my BPS contributions now pay for my health care... a saving of approximately 12000 pesos/annum. 3 cheers for Tabare Vazquez :-) Patrick. |
