Has anyone raised kids in Uruguay or Argentina?

Talk for and about Expats. Living in this Uruguay? Let others know about it. Want to live here? Ask questions!
Expat, Uruguay

Jenny from Washington -

With a business that is potentially portable, we have discussed for years the idea of living overseas for a time.

We have 4 children and feel it would be an excellent experience for us all, even if it was just for a year or two. It was the best thing my parents did for me growing up; it opened my eyes to the fact that we live in a culture here just as much as any other place. Also, the opportunity to be immersed in a foreign language is another benefit, which we are already preparing for. We are in the research stage right now and it is very difficult to find information on raising children in Uruguay or Argentina, almost everything is based on retiring or aimed at singles. I am looking specifically for information on:

Quality of schools

Opportunities for youth

Cultural issues we would face among the youth

Safety - crime/pedophile statistics

Other questions I have:

Are the people friendly to larger families?

Are the children accepting of American children?

What areas of Uruguay are considered best for raising a family and why?

My daughter loves horses so another consideration for us would be an area good for raising horses/cattle away from flooding.

We would plan on going down for a vacation to visit before making any permanent decisions.

If you have information or experience regarding these issues or know of a site that covers any of these topics, I would greatly appreciate your comments or leads.

We are a family of five with 3 younger children. We have lived abroad and recently re - patriated to Canada. Living abroad still has it's appeal for many reasons. I like to think that someday we will have the chance to do that again.

To get a little feel for Uruguay for families could anyone comment on the elementary school system and generally about some of the best things about living in Uraguay (Montivo?) and most difficult things to adjust to when living there as a family. Any comments would be apprieciated. Thanks!
