Drivers License

Can anyone clarify the procedures to get a drivers

license in Uruguay if you have a valid U.S. drivers

license?

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

first of all it would be recommendable to get your Cédula first, as most of the districts will ask for same.

The it depends on the district the procedures. In Montevideo you mak a Health Certificate for Driving License at any private clinic of your choise (must be allowd by the City Hall) and with that, your passport (entry stamp not older than 6 months), Cédula and Driving License you go to Tráfico at the IMM (City Hall) and you pay the fee and you do it. In Montevideo at the IMM it takes something about 45 minutes.

In Canelones you will need a translation of your driving license done by the corresponding Consulate (not all will do this) and with that, your Cédula, Passport (just in case) and Driving License you go to the office of the City Hall of the district and yo7u will have to make there your Health Check and pay the fee and you get your driving license. Depending of the office this procedure could take from 90 minutes to 3 hours.

I heard that in Maldonado it is also quite easy. The Health Check will be done at the City Hall.

The other districts I do not know anything about them.

Regards,

Rural east Colonia departmento
Thank author of this post/commentHere in Colonia dpto I first had to visit my local police station in Colonia Valdense with a cake. The kindly policeman accepted the cake and wrote me a letter confirming that I lived in the campo near Colonia Valdense.

Step two was to present myself, my UK driving licence, my cedula and the police letter at the driving test center at Nueva Helvecia. I also took my passport but nobody wanted to look at it.

I then saw the doctor who asked me if I was well, accepted my "Si" reply and had me to read a line of letters on his eye test board.

I did not have to do any driving or motorcycle riding as my UK licence was accepted but I did have to fill in two pro-forma theory test sheets which asked me to identify road signs, to describe how I would undertake a left turn in city and country settings and the maximum speeds allowed for cars and motorcycles in built up areas. The lady in charge came to check that I'd got the answers right as it seems to be the case in Colonia that you only pay the fee if you pass the test so passing is in everyone's best interests :-)

My only disappointment concerned the motorcycle licence. My UK licence allows me to ride bikes of unlimited size but my Colonia licence limits me to 200cc. If I want to ride a larger bike, I will have to pass a more serious medical exam and take a full test. OTOH a chap I met in the test center told me that things are more relaxed in Soriano (another departmento.)

Patrick.

I don't have a drivers license. I don't even know how to drive. What should I do to get my (first) drivers license in Uruguay?

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2742358471
