| Crazy Jorge Stupid me - Almost 20 years ago my Wife asked me why I don't try to be a Citizen of the United States after thinking about it I asked her to call for the application. She did and a few days later I got it. When I started reading the questions I came to one that said something like "I should be able to write my name in English" my reaction was "no way, my Mom named me Jorge and I will keep it for the rest of my life. And the application in pieces when right into the garbage. My Wife ready to divorce me, got the papers from the trash and read the part that make this stubborn Uruguayan mad. It was that if your Chinese for example you need to use a name that can be read in the English language. Being Uruguayan and limited in my English was the reason for this stupidity. It took 28 years to become an American Citizen I just wanted to be sure that my love for this Country was real not just in my best interest. |

And here I am having to wait another 2 years before I can apply for Uruguayan citizenship. If all the guff spoken about "free markets" was true, it should be possible for me to part exchange my Irish citizenship for an Uruguayo citizenship if I could find an Uruguayo who wanted to swap :-) |
| "Ciudadano -"
You found home quick and I'm very happy for you.I think I'ts great when you use the word (us). |
| "Limited in English language?"
Jorge, it's not you, it's the Inmigration Agency. They should have stated: "You should be able to write your name in the Latin Alphabet.", not "in English". The Inmigration officer that created the form, probably didn't know the name of the alphabet he's using, or thought that "Latin Alphabet" was some ancient mexican code. |
| "Jorge (second name Washington) funny or what ?"
Alberto - This message now posted as "Crazy Jorge" was first written to be under a "Dan from Norwalk statement". My intention was to show Dan that for some people the original name is very valuable and a big part of who you are.I'm guessing that the Forum coordinator thought it will be better as a Question than an Answer. It was also not the final product and due to phone calls etc I got distracted and when I come back to the Computer like magic the message was sent without my consent, funny. Latin Alphabet ? Ancient Mexican code ? lets give these Expats a break (for now) and find a nice place to eat with friends for them. I bet you, that they don't know "El Buzon" (My despedida) |
| "El Buzon"
Jorge is that El Viejo Buzon? The parilla place a few blocks from the Legislative Palace? Is that your local place to eat? |
| "A name is link a coat hook"
it is just some place to hang your identity. I surely hope no one is defined by their names. Now one with talking about Citizenship. |
| "El Buzon -"
Yes not far from Palacio Legislativo in Hocquart and Inca St in La Comercial neighbordhood. It was great when I lived in Uruguay. |
| ""Jorge (second name Washington) funny or what ?""
Jorge Washington, When I became a US citizen, ages ago, I also had the opportunity to change my name. Like you, I chose no to. In my case, not because I had a need or desire to preserve the name my parents gave me, but simply because I happen to be quite happy with my name as it is. In my case, the name "DAN" is SHORT for "DANIEL". It is NOT at all a different name. It is NOT an "English version" of "DANIEL". It is just a SHORT version of "DANIEL". Most people I know in the US call me "DAN" but some call me "DANIEL" and I am perfectly happy with either one. This is definitely NOT an issue for me. Just for the record, I have tremendous RESPECT for people who choose to change their names, for whatever reasons. This is their choice and their right. I feel (and know) I am NOT entitled to JUDGE them. Consider the case of individuals whose parents have given them names that are positively weird or controversial. Did you hear of the case of a child in PA whose parents named him HITLER? This was on the news in the US not too long ago. Would you judge this kid if later in life he chose to change his name??? Cheers. |
| "Jorge ( In USA = HISPANIC )"
My intention ONLY, was to let you know, that for some people it's important to keep their name as part of who they are and how they want to be remembered.Especially in the United States where your name Jorge is George. It has nothing to do with you calling yourself Dan, I turn when they call George. I want to be a First Class American citizen with the name JORGE. Maybe NOT important for a LOT of people, very important to ME. Also you and Alberto are good representation for Uruguay with this group of Expats. With your intelligence and Knowledge you can help with good information. Alberto is 57 and with a lot of memories of Uruguayan past and he is the one in Uruguay. Dan, was it you who was trying to learn to Drive Standard ? |
| ""Yea...I'm the one who can't drive standard...""
Thank you for your kind words. But you know, I'm not that smart... In Uruguay, my family and friends tease me all the time because I don't know how to drive a stick shift (imagine that!!!), and if you add to that the fact that I don't drink MATE...(sorry, I never did like it!), you know they consider me practically SUB-HUMAN!!! Oh well, what can I tell you? I am certainly not your typical Uruguayan, except that I do love CHIVITOS and to me, there's nothing more pleasurable than sitting at a Montevideo cafe and sharing a CAFECITO with a friend or two. By the way, today I found out that La Pasiva of Ejido and 18 was sold to none other than BURGER KING for a cool U$1.7 million, and will close in approx. 2 years...which proves my theory that the world is indeed coming to an end... ;-)) I was so depressed!!! I do hope they open elsewhere because to me, that particular La Pasiva is almost a cultural point of reference in Mvd. Plus, I love their Chivitos and hungaras! |
| "El Buzón."
Jorge, El Buzón, used to be a hot spot in the ages where there were a few restorants in MVD. For how long have you been abroad? There's a lot of good places we can meet the next time you come here! |
| "About names."
Long long time ago I had a project in the IT department of the BPS, and I could see some of the data they had about their subscribers. Knowledgable BPS employees pointed out some very funny names (well, funny for the others but not funny at all for the poor owners of those names). One I clearly remember was "Odioapapito", which traduced to English would sound like "I-hate-daddy". Of course, the poor fellow was the son of a single mother. I guess now there are some regulations. Or so I hope! |
| "El Buzon (no mail)"
I promise you that I will stop giving advice on Restaurants in MVD. El Buzon was always a Boliche with good food (Pasta for me) Many years (41) Alberto, my last time was 3 years ago but the reason for the visit was my Sister in the Hospital.I'm keeping a list of Restaurants that the Expats are mentioning in the Forum, it will be a pleasure to meet you and enjoy the new Restaurants. HAHA (used to be a hot spot in THE AGES)I feel like Mathusalem. |

As a youth I first visited the ROU in 1965 on a 5 day stop-over while we waited for a replacement part to arrive. The music and especially Los Shakers were altogether fab, cool and groovy as we used to say back then :-) |
| "The sixties."
I sometime think that it was not that the world, Uruguay, or Los Shakers were cool and and groovy then. WE were cool and groovy! |
| "Los Shakers - Los Iracundos"
Yes your right Alberto, But if I tell that to my youngest Son he would be laughing for a week.Patrick Los Shakers, Los Iracundos they were successful Bands in the sixties. In Uruguay you call success if you reach an Argentine audience and I believe that is also true today. I listened to a few of today's Bands La Trampa and Buitres and they are better musical Bands than the early ones. There a program on Teledoce "La Pua" that I watch here with a very good level of quality. Now why do you guys think that the name was (LOS) Shakers not (THE) Shakers ???? |

"Now why do you guys think that the name was (LOS) Shakers not (THE) Shakers ????"I supposed that it was because they came from the Southern Cone but they were so good I never thought to ask :-) I tried to get one of the survivor (and his son) to come and play at my 60th birthday/castle warming party but sad to say they already had a booking for the night in question. We had to make do with young Lukas and his band who did a fine rendition of Tom Petty's "Refugee" to mark my final settlement here, the traditional Swiss singers/ dancers/ yodellers from Nueva Helvecia and the most excellent Retro-80 from Mercedes. There is a great diversity of fine musicians in the ROU. |
| "Los Shakers -"
It's great to hear your diversification of things you like. It's always good to know when you reach 60 that you didn't waste your life.I think that I spent too much time in my life, watching CNBC and praying hard for the Market to go up, also getting the nick name of Mr Overtime. Being a Father of 4, Grandfather of 6 and now Great Grandfather of 1 it's probably my biggest accomplishment( no small feat) Always good to read from you |
