Coming to Uruguay

Thank author of this post/commentHello Uruguay

Well we have taken our first step toward becoming expats and booked our trip to Uurugay. We are coming for 3 weeks in November. We have a place for 2 weeks in Punta Del Este and plan a week in Montevideo but have no idea where to book a hotel there. Could use some ideas for the hotel. It does not need to be fancy but nice as we are only going to be there to sleep.

I also have a question about getting to Punta Del Este. Is there a bus that runs from Montevideo or should I rent a car in Montevideo to get there. We are going to rent one anyway so if you could advise me as to where would be the best place to rent one. We would like to attend the expat meetings too if it is all right with the group as this is a trip that includes looking for a house or apartment to consider retiring there. We have been to Brazil several times and I hope we like Uruguay as much as we liked Brazil.

Any advice you could give us would be great. I just found the TAG list and we will be going over them in the mext few months. I don't mind going stone cold into a foreign country but any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Terry & Jane Jackson

Pocitos
Thank author of this post/commentAbout hotels... I stayed in the Pocitos Plaza Hotel which seems a bit pricey.

Shirley has started a list of apartments for short term rentals... the link is below. Her list is nice, though I find most of the websites listed are unfriendly... ie: no prices... and its not clear which ones are updated regularly or not. Though, "Una Noche Más, " seems to be an excellent deal.

Everyone is welcome at the Sunday meetings... so just stop by. There are always lots of people willing to help and offer their perspectives.

I would take a bus to Punta del Este... but if you are looking to spend time in the various places near there a car is probably a good idea. You might check the rental agencies to see if you get a better price in Montevideo or Punta el Este.

Lee -- Yeah, it's too bad some of the websites don't include more information. These are the only sites I am aware of. If you know of others, please let me know and I'll add them to the list! Also, feel free to leave comments if you can offer further details about any of the places, including prices.

Terry & Jane -- Since you were looking for hotels, not short-term rental apartments, try the "Hotels" link from my site (in the right-hand column, under "Other types of lodging.")

Enjoy your planning! Perhaps we will meet one Sunday in November.

This is an open forum. All listings are the responsiblity of the posters; keep in mind, anyone can post anything!

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2274693459
