Apartment rental

Thank author of this post/commentNow retired, I wish to rent a furnished studio or small 1 BR apartment beginning September 1, 2009. I'd like to pay between $200 and $350 per month with a 6 month lease, but looking to stay longer. Ideally, I'd like to be in Centro (Ciudad Vieja or the nearby barrios). An older building is just fine.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank author of this post/commentHi Doug,

Great to see that you're getting a head start on your search for an apartment.

It shouldn't be too hard to find a small apartment for that price range in Centro (toward the port, not around 18 de Julio) or in Ciudad Vieja (again its cheaper further down or closer to the port, because around Sarandi and Plaza Matriz or Plaza Zabala tend to be more expensive).

The most important question is are you looking to rent something with or without furniture? Because it is very difficult (if not impossible) to rent unfurnished apartments for anything less than a year. Furnished apartments are often available for 6 month lease but the rental prices are more expensive because they are usually aimed at tourists.

I was recently looking for a studio ("ambiente") or small 1 bedroom apartment with furniture and there weren't many available for short term lease. I contacted this inmobiliaria - Andrea Cid, Cel: 099-195-832. email: andrea [at] grupodelcastillo.com. She was very nice and very helpful but it is difficult because there aren't a large number of furnished apartments on the market.

Also check buscandocasa.com to get an idea of prices and availability in different areas. If you want something cheap you might have to come here, stay in a hostel for a few days and look out for local announcements and signs. I found some things are mundo anuncio, but many of these places are for students.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 154412207
