Unforunately, Malaka has closed and the owner is returning to Canada to spend more time with his family.

He said the place opening in the same location should be good. Maybe by the end of Oct they will be open.

Oh NO! Malaka closed? Where will I eat when I go there in December. PAUL, if you read this...go back, re-open. PLEASE!

This is the BEST restuarant in MVD and I've spent a LOT of time eating in restaurants in MVD over the last year...6 weeks of travel, eating out every meal...you get around. Unfortunately, I only found Malaka the last week I was in MVD (my first visit) but I made up for lost time by eating there as much as I could afte I found it.

I've eaten a lot of great Asian (having lived in Central California (SF, Monterey, Carmel, LA, etc)...so I know good Asian and I was really impressed with Paul's offerings.

I hate to hear it is closing...this CAN't be true?!?!?

Renee

Thank author of this post/commentWow, I was reading the first post and thinking I would love to visit a restaurant that has a great selection of Asian food. I am sorry to hear that Malaka has closed. I will keep checking to hear about another great Asian restaurant.

I agree with the people wo said it has great food. The service is also very fast and if you speak english it won't be a big problem for them to understand you.

I wonder why Malaka closed though it has seemingly great reviews from people here at the forums? In its glory days what is Malaka like? Can you link a photo or website which shows what is it like to dine in Malaka? Could it be because of recession? We will never know.

Helga, from what I have heard, the owner of the restaurant cited 'personal reasons.' It is unfortunate that it was closed down when many people were seeking to check it out.

The idea of dealing on a whole range of Asian food is a pretty excellent idea. Does it mean that the people there like that type of food?

Internet searches are not bearing any fruit nonetheless..could the sitealso have been closed down?

Thank author of this post/commentThere is definitely a lack of good restaurants offering foreign cuisine here. I think it would be a good business idea but the problem is most Uruguayans seem pretty traditional set in their eating habits and the more internationally minded segments of society may not be large enough to keep a business afloat...

Thank author of this post/commentYes.. but some strange (compared to traditional cuisine) things like Sushi has caught on... so its not an impossible idea.

Thank author of this post/commentUruguayan food prejudices still amaze me.

I co-sponsor a Formula 2000 dirt track team and we race on Sundays during the winter. Being the ROU we stop for a lengthy lunch from the portable parrilla and on cold days I take along a thermos pot of medium curry. The team always says that they can't eat spicy food yet last Sunday the pot was emptied of curry (inc a kilo of beef) before I got to it.

Thank author of this post/commenthaha...thats just the result of FREE food, if its free they'll eat it :)

Really though...I think its time to broaden the culinary horizons down here, somebody start importing Indian spices to Montevideo already!

Myself, the lovely Nora Roher and Snr Hercules (who builds windpumps) provide all the food and drink so the rapid disappearance of the curry can't be blamed on the tight-fistedness of the rest of the team. There is always plenty of asado as well as home made pizza, egg'n'ham pies and assorted other starters as well as huge jam tarts for later in the afternoon in case hunger overwhelms you :-)
