The ROU is a secular state. It guarantees residents' freedom of religion but protects the population from having the religious views of others forced upon them. The clip tells us how 6% of Evangelicals are begging God to make the population believe whatever it is that they think we should believe but does not tell us what the other 94% of Evangelicals want. :-) I live in the protestant "bible-belt" of the ROU. Colonia Valdense (pop 4000) has 8 well-attended Christian churches and I'm happy to report that they seem to get on with their own worship without feeling the need to chase each other with accusations of heresy. IMV Uruguay is one of the more egalitarian societies on the planet. If we suffer from "spiritual poverty, " I fear that most of the world must be spiritually bankrupt. :-) |
| "spiritual poverty"
This video clip makes the poeple who made it look both silly and arrogant. To believe that only those who adhere to established religion are "spiritual" is absurd. These are people who would probably live happily in theocracies, and see nothing wrong with imposing their dogmatic views and beliefs on others. In some of the most benign of these theocracies, "non-believers" are excluded from certain economic/social and cultural activities and are denied access to certain jobs, while in the most extreme cases changing religions, theft, adultery and sexual orientation are punished with mutilation, and even death. Uruguayan society is a far more open and accepting society than others, regionally and globally. Freedom of religion is a right guaranteed by the constitution. If 6% of the population are not happy with this, let them try living in one of the theocracies that abound elsewhere. |

"If 6% of the population are not happy with this, let them try living in one of the theocracies that abound elsewhere."One of the things I love about Uruguayan society is that it has no objections to minorities struggling to assert themselves so long as they do it on their own time. I feel sure that nobody would object to the allegedly discontented 6%-ers trying to increase their numbers and persuade us about the benefits of adopting their points of view. Here in Valdense, the usual method is for each sect to hand out informative leaflets though we have one cunning old boy who pretends to hitch-hike in order to stop and leaflet passing cars :-) |
| "persuasion"
There's nothing wrong in trying to persuade others to adopt one's point of view. But the means by which this is done can be an issue. Saying or implying that people who don't see things the way you do are somewhat lacking in something (i.e. less spiritual or spiritually poorer)is simply unfair. I am not suggesting all Evangelists are unfair. And I apologize if I gave that impression. But what I am saying is that this particular video certainly is, because it places a sort of label on a whole country, a nation, and a people, as "less than", simply because it does not conform to their world view or what they think is "right". |

Viewing the clip again, I can see your point.IMV taken collectively, those who live in the Banda Oriental exhibit rather more common sense than you find in most places nowadays. |
