Colonia del Sacramento has a street market called Avenida General Flores. You probably would be able to find a lot of souvenirs.

La Feria de Tristan Narvaja is a flea market in Montevideo. I had a friend to recommend this place and she said that she friend some good deals at this market.

Yeah.. maybe an antique typewriter, clothes, produce pets just about anything you want... keep you hand on your wallet though it is one of the few places in Montevideo you need to worry about pickpockets. A friends US Passport was lifted there... but the police recovered it a while later and return it to him (though he had already replaced it).

Really, is Montevideo a dangerous place? Did customs give him a hard time about the passport? I usually keep my passport and money in my front pocket when I'm traveling. I try to wear clothes that have front pockets.

He easily got a new passport from the U.S. Embassy here. It is NOT dangerous here. Notice I said he was pickpocketed and not mugged. The problem with the Tristan Narvaja Feria is that the streets are packed with people making it easy picking for the bad apples. My friend probably has his passport in his back pocket and it was probably sticking out a bit...

I would agree that Montevideo is not a dangerous place...

Good advice about the flea market. And I did understand that it was just the flea market and not Montevideo as a whole. Be aware of your person, possessions, and surroundings wherever you are, however.
