American Televsion
| American Televsion Is Uruguayan television programming mostly local or South American? Or does a lot of the programming come from the United States? |
| Depends on your language of choice.By sheer numbers, on cable (I dont use dish anymore).. it's local and spanish. a lot of sports and a few local soaps and game shows. For movies, it's a different story. Mostly American movies on HBO, Cinecanal, etc. The really popular series are North American.. like CSI and Criminal minds etc. In english with Spanish subtitles. Unfortunately, when u watch a lot of these, it doesn't help one learn Spanish. |
| I like DVDs to listen in Spanish and watch in English. Trying to read Spanish subtitles to learn Spanish is too distracting. My Spanish is getting good enough to enjoy some movies in just Spanish.... of course I might have a seriously different idea about what's happening than everyone else! |
| Lee. You got it right.... That's the right way to do it... ILast night, I took the plunge and watched a Bruce Willis movie on Space (99%) spanish, obviously no subtitles. I was proud of myself. Then my wife sat down beside me and told me this was too difficult. She said she learned English by watching cartoons. You have to start with child level vocabulary and syntax and move up from there. Guess I have to live with Tom and Jerry for the next few months :-) |
| Very interesting. Thank you for filling me in on all of that. If you're going to learn by watching cartoons, shouldn't you pick cartoons with dialogue? Tom and Jerry don't talk. LOL! Bugs Bunny is what I would choose. |
| Yeah, that is true, if you are trying to learn English by watching cartoons then I suggest that you pick anything except tom and jerry. By watching that you will only learn the language of dogs and cats in and English speaking countries. Anyway, good luck on that. |

Its not a cartoon but if anyone wants a copy and has 400 gigs of free disk space, I have a full set of Startrek Next Generation, Voyager and DS 9 in xvid.avi format with Spanish soundtrack :-) |
| "learning Spanish from TV"
The first tenet of Maximillian Berlitz, yes, the guy who started the language schools back in the late 1880s and a speaker of some 30 languages, was that you could only learn a language by speaking it. Mind you, his statement was in reaction to the language teaching methods of the time which were based on learning dead languages like Greek and Latin. Anyway, from personal experience, I can say that I agree with him. If you want to improve your Spanish, get out and start talking to people. Watching dubbed or subtitled movies or cartoons can be misleading as the mouth is not making the same words and the translation may be expedient rather than litteral. My advice: start watching the newscasts and weather reports ... the anchors usually speak clearly and the information is of general interest. |

In my opinion watching the TV news can mess up your mind. Friends ask me why I seem to prefer living in my own little world. I reply that its much nicer than theirs :-) |
| "Little world."
hahaha. Good one!Continue like that, you'll live longer. Don't worry, if the nuclear armagedon finally occurs, you'll know it from the forum. |
| "it's all around us"
For about twenty years I lived without a television and was quite up-to-date on all of the news, media etc.. I put it down to getting good reception on the fillings in my teeth. I suspect, that it's just because current events are always being spoken of and, consequently, hard to avoid. When I began re-watching TV, I couldn't get over the adverts and the endless flogging of merchandise that one could easily live without. Ultimately, opening your door to TV lets in all of the demons. |
| "Only by choice"
Best invention ever (The DVR) it takes me 30 minutes to watch an hour show. |
| "Only by choice"
Second best invention: the Cable de-coder with Hard Disk Drive. Record anything you want to see, then reproduce it whenever you find convenient and skiping the advertisements. |

I have to pay through the nose for a Dedicado connection. I need web access and I need a Skype connection but when I'm doing neither of those, the very slow connection is engaged in bit-trickling on a 24/7 basis. |

That's good idea. However, If you are trying to learn English by watching cartoons, you should pick anything, except tom and jerry. By watching that you will only learn the language of dogs and cats in and English speaking countries. |
