Thank author of this post/commentAre most of Uruguayan children home schooled or go to school? And if u know: what percent of the students are home schooled?

I heard that homeschooling isn't allowed in Uruguay and that legally children must go to school, but I think that might only be true for Uruguayan children. I know a few expat families that were homeschooling and doing online school for more a few years while here so I'm sure its possible.

The only downside is that school is the easiest and fastest way for kids to integrate and learn the language, otherwise they may find it difficult to find a "way in". Uruguayans are very friendly people, but as a foreigner it can be difficult to integrate because they are very close with their families and old school friends and tend to be happy to stay in those same circles for life.

I agree with Foodie on this issue. I am an educator in the US and home school has grown quite a bit in recent years due to the perceived decline of public education (especially in the urban areas) and the high cost of private schools. Unfortunately, children who are home schooled may not get some of the benefits associated with attending a public or private school: acquiring the necessary socialization skills, by interacting with others --in a diverse, complex context-- that usually (but not always)helps in making an individual a well-adjusted, productive member of society.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3294269862
