Homeschooling

Thank author of this post/commentHi all,

Myself and my husband are considering moving to the suburbs of Montevideo (haven't decided a definite place yet) and we have 3 young children (5, 7 and 10) that we are looking to homeschool while were are here for the next few years.

I am having quite a bit of difficulty finding any solid information about what the requirements are for homeschooling in Uruguay, or even if its allowed! I've read from one mother that they had to show proof of their children's regular school attendance in order to get residency - can anyone shed some light on this?

I found the website of the National Administration of Public Education but my spanish isn't very good yet and I'm not sure if it gives any information.

Can anyone out there tell me anything about this? I'm also wondering if it turns out that I do have to send my children to school here what is their stance on religion in the curriculum?

Hi Lucille,

you won't find information about homeschooling, as same is not accepted by Uruguayan Law. As per the Law, children have to attend school.

Regards,

Thank author of this post/commentHi Peter,

Thanks for your response, it has been very hard to get some information or advice on this topic.

Are you 100% sure about this? Are there any loopholes or exceptions?

Also do you know about the role of religion in public schools here? Is it prominent? Do you know if it affects the way things are taught (eg. creationism v evolution)

Thank author of this post/commentYour kids need to learn about a vast range of subjects including BOTH creationism AND evolution. Otherwise they will never learn to think on their own. Hopefully that is the objective of your school... teaching you to think while exposing you to a full range of ideas.

Just because someone learns about both creationism AND evolution doesn't mean they have been programmed to believe either one. Maybe your kid will be lucky enough and come up with a third or fourth possible alternative!
