| Roofing Our new hovel (actually two of them) have the local garden variety uninsulated corrugated steel roof. The interior view of this roof is obstructed by various hap-hazard ceiling installations that are remarkably different from room to room. One is even made of 1/4" styrofoam which the previous owner managed to put his hand through. We'll likely remove these fairly quickly in favor of real insulation. So I'm considering various options for sprucing things up a bit. One option is to insulate the inside of the roof, then cover that with wood paneling going for the vaulted pine ceiling look. As for the outside, we could simply leave them alone. Additionally, we could install a spanish tile roof. I know nothing about spanish tile roofs other than I think they would look great in this situation, tend to be durable, they're heavy, and they're attached to the roof with these long nails, something not compatible with corrugated steel. Has anyone installed a spanish tile roof on their house like this? Is it more money and trouble than it's worth? Has anyone else done something different with their roof other than leaving the rusted metal visible? brian |

They tend to come in two styles... light or heavy. The light version usually comprises corrugated metal sheeting fixed to lightweight metal purlins. For insulation options, if the sheeting is in good condition you can have the underside of the metal sheets sprayed with poliuritano foam and/or put up a false ceiling of wood, fiberglass pannels, PVC or whatever with extra insulation whatever ceiling you choose. If you are planning to keep the roof light but to apply new sheeting, you can use metal/poliuritano foam/metal sheets which offer good heat and noise insulation values but cost itro 60 U$S/sq meter. The heavy roof version is of steel reinforced cast concrete with or without an exterior coating of tiles. You'll need sturdier walls for one of these because of the weight. You'll then need to insulate the underside. I opted for suspended ceilings with added 10cm (4 inch) expanded polystyrene sheeting above it. |
