| Quality of work in UruguayI live in South Africa and have been in the building Industry for twenty one years. I have set very high standards for the quality of work, I expect from myself and my employees. I would love to move to Uruguay, as we have an affirmative action policy which excludes whites from getting many contracts. I have, never, had come backs on my work and everything I do, is to the highest level, but my customers, pay for that quality. Should I wish to improve building standards in Uruguay, would the workers confirm to my standards of finishing, using a straight edge at all times etc. Would Customers be prepared to pay for that quality.PS I hate anything that is not straight (Roofs, windows, tiling cupboards etc). We have a very good standard of living here in South Africa but it's getting very, very expensive to live and work here. Are there a good verity of building materials available? Lots of Questions, Help! |

I've seen examples of high standards of building work in MVD and along the coast and there are a few excellent construction companies but I reckon that you would find the majority of the building output here to be way below the standards you'd find in South Africa. IMV there is space here for quality constructors.I'm now retired but I used to run a specialist firm in the UK which undertook remedial works on ancient buildings as well as a number of "pseudo-authentic" new builds using ancient methods/materials (mostly "green" hardwood timber framing.) In the ROU most tradesmen like to do things in a Uruguayan manner rather than in the way the boss tells them to do it so when I spent 2.5 years refurbishing a 100 year old farmhouse here and extending it with a Norman style tower, I had to be on site ALL the time if I wanted things done my way rather than their way. They tolerated my foreign insistence on installing damp courses and membranes, insulation in roofs, walls and floors, lintels over doors and windows, flue liners, ventilation provision, rainwater gutters, a septic tank c/w a finger soakaway system etc etc but only if I was there in person. To them such things seemed like a wicked waste of time and money. :-) I found a high degree of resistance to the use of power tools, modern materials and methods but this seems to be a feature of the country itself rather than just in the construction trade... though living as I do in a rural backwater, I suspect that its partly because of the location. OTOH I moved here to enjoy the slow pace of life and the low stress laid-back attitudes of the people as I view it to be ideal for my declining years so all in all, I'm very happy with the outcome. It would take artillery, death and/or punitive taxes to shift me :-) |
