You are looking for a small, furnished apartment that is as inexpensive as possible because you don't plan to live there except as need to demonstrate to immigration that you are living here?A room in someone's house would do? Or do you want a place where you pay the electric and phone so you have those receipts as your "proof of address"? It is common in Uruguay when doing something. Opening a bank account, getting a contract for a cell phone that you provide a copy of your UTE (Electric) or Antel (Telephone) bill as proof of address. Once I was asked to get a "constancia of domicile" from the police. That was a small piece of paper to verify my address. The police asked for a bill and I showed my cable bill (the only one I had at the time). As he explained that it had to be UTE or Antel he stamped the form and I was done. I currently am investigating a move to Colonia del Sacramento for a 1-2 year stay. What kind of prices can I expect for a clean, 1-BR furnished apartment close to the beach? |

Ken, as you mention that one of your requirements is to be "close to the beach", let me tell you some things about Colonia, just in case you don't know the place. Though it does have beaches, Colonia is not meant as a "beach town". Beach towns in Uruguay are East of Montevideo. It's not that Colonia's beaches aren't good enough. In fact, they are quite better than Playa Jaco in CR. At least, unlike P.Jaco, they have white, smooth, "walkable" sand. But you should know that Colonia is on a River bank, so you have river (brown) water. Clean in terms of polution, but brown. The other difference is climate. In coastal CR you have warm "beach" weather the whole year round. In Colonia, as is the case of the rest of Uruguay, you have the four distinct seasons, and the use of beaches for baths is reduced to 2-3 months in Summer. |
Comment #304/08/11 02:38Rural east Colonia departmento | "River -v- sea"
I'd agree with Alberto.Colonia del Sacramento does have a huge and stunningly beautiful west facing beach running alongside the Real de San Carlos just north of the city itself with the rather posh Sheraton hotel at the northern end near the former bullring and the still functioning race track... but it is river rather than sea. There are some very nice properties along the Real de San Carlos but because of the place's proximity to the BQB terminal and the demand from wealthy Portenos (from Bs As) I'mtold that they aren't cheap. |
