Looking for English-speaking friends in Colonia
| Looking for English-speaking friends in Colonia Hello, I am travelling to Colonia in January (4-22) in the hope of buying a house and creating a second residence. My Spanish is not good and I am hoping to meet English-speaking people in Colonia. I have heard about the Weekly Expat Lunch in Montevideo which sounds like a great idea. Since I hope to settle in Colonia, I would like to have lunch with people in Colonia to discuss living in Colonia. Please respond if you are interested. - Steve |

I live on the other side of the departmento about 60 kms from Colonia del Sacramento but I'm usually up for lunch :-) Come to think on it its been several months since I sampled the delights of the Suizo at Nueva Helvecia. It was the first country hotel to be built in the ROU (late 1860s) and offers traditional Swiss cooking with stress on delicious sauces. In spite of many attempts, I've yet to manage to eat the three courses on offer. :-) |

I AM ALSO LOOKING AT URUGUAY AS A PLACE TO RE-LOCATE BUT HAVE TO HAVE A LOOKFIRST & GATHER MORE INFORMATION. |

There is lots on info on this site and on others so read away but come and visit us BEFORE you take serious decisions about relocating. I'm a retired non-US citizen who made his pension provisions buying small rentable houses in the UK over the last 40 years. As a result I had horrific potential capital gains tax liabilities in the UK if or when I ever sold them but because the ROU doesn't tax foreign income and capital gains, becoming an ROU resident has removed these burdensome liabilities from my aged shoulders :-) I could have achieved this by relocating to the Caymans but after much research and several repeat visits to all my short-listed havens, the ROU was the only place which satisfied all of my criteria and has since exceeded my expectations in a number of ways. 3 to 5 years ago it was also the cheapest... but not now. In my view, its best to draw up a list of your requirements and then compare them to what is available in the various locations of your choice. |

| ""Lunch at the Suizo""
Patrick, I just went over this thread and after reading your post I am suddenly hungry... I was in Colonia and the surrounding areas approximately 3 years ago and wanted to have lunch at the Hotel Suizo but for some reason I ended up at the Nirvana. I am now planning to return to Colonia --for a day trip-- in August with a couple friends. Maybe we could meet you at the Suizo for a meal? :-) |

"Maybe we could meet you at the Suizo for a meal? :-) "Definitely. The proximity of the Suizo is one of the reasons I live where I do :-) The Nirvana has more stars, gorgeous grounds and a large indoor swimming pool but when it comes to 1920s style Swiss/Uruguayo food, you just can't beat the Suizo. I even get a generous cash discount :-) |
