Hotel Space in Colonia
| Hotel Space in Colonia Wow! I have never seen a city so hard to find a hotel room (unless I want to spend $250-$300 per night). I am going to visit Uruguay with the hope of finding my future. Well, I thought I would look around Colonia for a couple of days before going to MVD. Ha. I have been to several online booking sights as well as direct to the hotels, posadas, B&Bs, homestays etc. This trip is in 5 weeks. I thought it would be plenty of time. My bad. I am looking forward to meeting the expat community when I get there. If anybody has any suggestions about accomodations, I would appreciate it. |
| "Me too !"
Hi Marc, I also consider to relocate to MVD. I would love to find your feedback based on your reaserch. |
| "How about a hostel?"
Hi Marc, Patrick is our resident expert on everything out the Colonia direction....I'm sure he'll throw in his two cents at some point. I'm afraid that due to the time of year and the type of crowd Colonia attracts its not so surprising the difficulties you're having. The high season "escape to the coast" starts in November and doesn't stop until February...people book up to a year in advance to get the places they want! Also Colonia del Sacramento is a beautiful (but expensive) little town that attracts the fairly rich Argentines (often with fancy yachts) from across the river. I would suggest avoiding the hotels and looking for a posada, bed and breakfast, or even some of the hostels have lovely private rooms with double bed and ensuite for very reasonable prices. Here is one lovely hostel/bed and breakfast in Colonia del Sacramento. I'm not sure of your exact dates so I can't guarantee they have space but it seems they're not totally booked out. Here is the website: |

If that doesn't work you're sure to find SOMETHING on this very extensive list of places to stay: |
| "more hostels...."
There seems to be a good few hostels in Colonia....I couldn't recommend any personally (I recommend El Viajero because I know the owner and he's a friendly guy who keeps high standards) but hostelworld is a handy online resource to see what is available at what prices for what dates.I think the old perception of hostels as grotty rooms with bunk beds is long gone. Now there are many "boutique" or upscale hostels offering rooms that are nicer and cosier than hotels, often at half the price...its worth a look |
| "Room in Colonia"
Well, I'm not a happy camper. Feel like I got screwed. I found a nice posada in Colonia and emailed them. They responded promptly and told me they had no bookings for the days I wanted and |
| "High season starting"
Hi Marc, I think some of your message might have got cut off somehow.... Like I said, its coming into high season and the weather in November is lovely so many people go to the coast and they have planned their dates very far in advance. I'm afraid you can't expect everywhere to have open spaces, but I'm sure there is still SOME availability. Did you look at the lists in the links above? There are many many places... |
| "room in Colonia and MVD"
I guess it did get cut off. I was saying that early in my morning, they told me they had a room. I immediatly responded with my cc # at 9:28am. Later at night (9pm), they told me that they had rented it in the afternoon. So, I used the link you sent me and I found El Capullo. I believe I have secured a room there. Thanks so much Elaine. Now I am looking for a place in MVD after I leave Colonia. Anyone out there have any suggestions? |
| "Lots of suggestions!"
I'm really happy to hear you found somewhere....eventually :)There is a wide selection of accommodation in Montevideo, it just depends what you're looking for and for how long. Will you be in the city for a few days, weeks, a month? There are some lovely hostel/bed and breakfast facilties. Palermo Art Hostel is a really nice place, and I have heard great things about a little spot called Una Noche Mas ("one more night"). If you specifically want a hostel there's the budget hotel Ibis on the rambla (its fine, but it has no character, I there are much better places to stay that will help you get a feel for the city). |

and here is the link for the Palermo Art Hostel...Of course there are lots more options for places to stay, but these would be my budget picks. If you have more money to spend then by all means enjoy the luxury! |
Comment #1010/31/09 13:38Rural east Colonia departmento | "MVD hotel"
I'm more of an east Colonia lifeform... Nueva Helvecia and Colonia Valdense are my beat. I don't know Colonia del Sacramento that well.I'm also a tight-fisted old git so whenever I have to stay over in MVD I use the Ibis hotel. Its not chic and its not fashionable but its situated by the Rambla Sur and it offers clean, modern and quiet rooms with wifi for a bit over 60 U$S/night. |
| "Thanks Patrick"
I hadn't seen the Ibis online and I had made a reservation at the Pocitos Plaza. It is about $10 more but does include breakfast, so not too much higher. Do you know that hotel? I will stay there a few days and look for the next place. Do the hotels there have dual current or do I need a converter, What type of plug is used there? |
| "Punto Berro Hostel?"
Has anyone stayed here? With privates rooms down to US$36/night it looks like a deal. Sorry for linking to a page where you have to wait for the slow loading flash to load before you can be completely annoyed by blinking, moving icons or navigate the site. |
| "Hostels v Hotels"
I think many people have the impression that any place with "hostel" in the name is designed only for 18 year old, loud drunken backpackers.Having worked in a few hostels and stayed in many I can tell you that it is NOT the case. In fact I think that many hostels are not only cheaper, but quieter and more comfortable. They are small scale establishments and so the staff are usually very friendly and helpful. I haven't stayed in any hostels in Montevideo myself but many friends have stayed in Palermo Art Hostel (linked above) and Una Noche Mas (also linked above) and gave very good reviews. During high high season (ie December, January) things may be a bit more hectic, but the rest of the year I would highly recommend these bargains. |
