organic farms around Colonia

I am interested in purchasing or developing an organic farm near Colonia. Would there be an interest from restaurants or the general public to purchase organic vegetables and fruit?

I think the key factors are: price, flavor and looks. Often the look of "organic" produce in the supermarkets (combined with their price) would seem to make an impossible sale.

I can't answer your question, but would think that first you need to see what organic products are available and how they sell. Then try to get a feel for demand for more.

Thank author of this post/commentDefinitely ask around at first. You will need to know if you will have any buyers for it. Interest in Organic foods have increased in the states but I am not sure about in Uruguay.

Thank author of this post/commentYou should have no problems purchasing land to start an organic farm near Colonia. Land is cheap, and so is the cost of manual labor.

However, your problem will most likely be selling your product for a reasonable profit compared to US standards.

1. There isn't a huge market for food labeled as "organic" in Uruguay, especially the Colonia area. Most Uruguayans aren't crazed like many US citizens into thinking that "organic" food is better than "non-organic" food. I imagine that in Montevideo you could find a few markets that would buy your product, but then you would have the transportation charges from Colonia to Montevideo to add to your costs.

2. Most vegetables grown in Uruguay are already much more "organic" than normal vegetables grown in the US, anyway. They mainly use manure for fertilizer, and don't use a lot of pesticides like in the US, so the difference between your "organic" vegetables and the "non-organic" vegetables would be slim-to-none.

Their views may sound discouraging but have faith in your business, but before faith, wisdom must come first. Try weighing things out, there just a limited number of people who are vegetarians or concerned whether their vegetables are organic or not. Uruguay is a meat eating country right? but that doesn't mean that the organic farm business will fail. Try exploring and ask for other forms of business. Plan it first before you jump ti immediate decisions.

STREET MARKETS

Every day there are excellent street markets selling farm and dairy and meat products direct to local housewives. I'd start with looking at them - and you'll have lots of fun too.

Thank author of this post/commentI live near Colonia Valdense... an area with many small farms where fruit and veggie growing is popular.

Broadly speaking, much of the veggie production is organic, not because of high principles but because agrochemicals are expensive. Last year I persuaded my local SOFOVAL co-op store in Colonia Valdense to start an organic section but you tend to see the same produce from the same producers in both the organic and non-organic sections :-)

Although we grow a lot of veggies, I'm sorry to report that to most local people, if the food didn't bleed at some stage, it isn't worth eating. I attended a birthday party just before Christmas and took along a fine mixed salad. Of the 25 guests present, only 3 of us ate any of it.

Thank author of this post/commentI often joke that the just put some red peppers and onions on the parrilla for color.. not to actually eat!

BUT... there are small fruit and veggie stores on almost every street corner in Montevideo and many street markets full of produce... so someone eats the stuff!

It's like hot sauce... no one admits to anyone consuming the stuff... but a locally made brand is much hotter than Tabasco sauce. Additionally, if you visit a restaurant regularly you'll see that the bottles of Tabasco sauce get emptied out pretty quick....

Here's a blog post I did a while back on some of the fruit available here...

Thank author of this post/commentYou're right.

I co-sponsor a dirt track racing team here in Colonia and on winter race days I usually take along a big pot of beef curry as my contribution to the picnic lunch.

Everyone tells me how the Uruguayos can't take very spicy dishes but strange to say, the curry is usually gone within the first 5 minutes.

It must be evaporation :-)

"Vegetarian eating meat"

Hello, I am Uruguayan, enjoying a lot your postings, normally quietly, but I HAVE to say something about this. The ones living hear have probably heard this before, but hopefully you did not: Here in Uruguay we are ALL vegetarians :) Yes, what do cows eat? Well, after all meat is only processed vegs :)

Quite an old joke I know, I couldn't help it.

Have a great time!

"from Canada"

My wife and I are considering retiring in Uruguay. Our #1 consideration is, "Will we be able to access a wide range of genuinely organic, pesticide-free produce year around?"

If you build it, they will come! (or at least, we will come.)

Have you guys come down for a visit yet? That would be the place to start.

If you read the above replies to the original post in 2005, you'll see some comments that will give you an idea of where the food situation is here. First, in the major super markets you will find an Organic section. The are ok to pretty darn good depending on where you live. At the local 'Street Markets', here called 'Ferias', the produce may not be marked 'Organic', (in some cases it is marked) but it is way, way more 'Organic' than general produce in N. America. There is not much GMO seed sold here except to the Wheat, Soya, and Rice growers, but Monsanto, et al, are present in the background manipulating everything they can. Reminds one of the old 'United Fruit Company' days in the tropical regions of the Americas.

The growers here simply don't have enough money to pay for very much in the way of Agricultural Chemicals. Gracias al Suerte! The air is clean and there is ample water. The soils are rich where they haven't been over farmed with cattle and sheep over the centuries. Erosion is a problem that the Ministry is working on, though not to the degree I'd like to see. Should you decide to come down here, buy a property with a bit of extra land around it, and plant your own garden for a 100% guaranty. Should you do that, I'll come over now and then to help with the harvest.>)
