Owner, El Diablo Tranquilo
| Owner, El Diablo TranquiloHello all, While I haven't participated in this forum before, I've been an occasional peruser through my friendship with a staff writer here. Hopefully this gets us started. Since I have not introduced myself to most of you, I'm Brian, owner of El Diablo Tranquilo Hostel & Bar, which I am proud to say has been a success not only as a stand alone business, but in helping further Punta del Diablo as a destination as well. If any of you would like to get in touch about experiences, advise, or anything else, please email me at brian (at) eldiablotranquilo.com. As we have continued to grow (we've had over 16, 000 guests and have employed almost 200 people over these 2+ years) I have experienced the best and worst of doing business in Uruguay. It is in hoping to address two of the inherent challenges (shoddy construction and lack of commercial credit) that I am seeking to raise a bit of capital and thought many of you who tune in to this forum may be interested. If any of you have considered or are considering Self Directed IRAs as a means of investing in a successful Uruguayan business, I would love to get in touch. For those unaware, a Self Directed IRA allows you to allocate funds in a current IRA to a real estate or business interest providing that it meets a series of qualifications best left to your financial adviser - we have gone through this process with the financial management company Entrust in the US and have some experience with the process. SD-IRAS allow you to retain the tax advantages of traditional IRAs while increasing the return on those funds (I am offering 10%+fees over four years - backed by our physical assets here in Uruguay). For anyone interested, I would be happy to invite you up to Punta del Diablo to get to know our place, enjoy a nice meal, and some time on the beach before the cold sets in. Look forward to hearing from you and please any questions or curiosities I can help with, apart from the offer above, please get in touch via email and I will do my best to lend a hand. Cheers, Brian |
| "El diablo tranquilo."
Brian, I've never stayed at your hostel but I've read good things about it all over the forums. Good luck with your funds raising. Financiation of new enterprises or project extensions is really a problem in Uruguay. But the money eventually shows up when the project is well reasonable and management is trustable. |
| "An entrepreneurial success story"
Brian is being modest. His project has put Punta del Diablo on the map of international travel destinations. It is an amazing success story. If you want to see a pure entrepreneurial spirit in action, meet Brian. He is also a man of integrity and a pleasure to do business with. Congratulations on your hard-earned success, and best wishes in all your future endeavors. |

Thank you so much Shirley, It's been a challenge but ultimately a success on many levels. I do invite any of you who have any questions - whether interested in financing or not - to get in touch or come visit. We quiet down a bit here after Easter and I would be happy to host you. Cheers, Brian |
| "Beyond Investing"
I understand your need to find investors, but I think you are also missing a great opportunity. Why not promote your Bed and Breakfast to the members of this forum.I've love to hear about all the advantages and experiences it offers for travelers. From your post here and I realize it is for investors, I don't have any idea how to get there, what to do there, how much it costs, what the good seasons for visiting are, if you are open or there is anything to do in the winter. Maybe another post for all of tourists out there would be helpful. |
| "PDD is an awesome place"
Brian, I wish you good luck expanding your business in PDD. My sister and brother-in-law have two small businesses there, a surf shop and a coffee shop, and they're doing quite well. They simply adore PDD and so do their girls. I was there three years ago and was positively impressed with how much PDD had grown. It's amazing how a tiny sleepy village becomes a bustling resort during the summer seaason. |
| "The more info the better"
When making any post at all I think the more you can give people the better. Whether you're advertising or just sharing something I find that links, photos, addresses, opening hours, tips etc...it all helps to build up a picture.I worked in El Diablo Tranquilo hostel for nearly 4 months and found it to be a truly unique and special creation. Anyone can throw together a building and put a sign outside (which many people do in the Uruguayan beach towns!) but El Diablo Tranquilo was thought through with love and attention to detail and it has paid off. Many establishments in the beautiful little beach town don't last 2 seasons because a) they have no business plan and are just winging it, and b) the low season is LOW indeed. Brian however has capitalized on today's internet savvy travelling community and not only do people come from far and wide all-year round, but people all across the world know the name El Diablo Tranquilo - that's quite a feat! I wrote a blog post on the town a while back, it may give a little insight in to the area... |
