I deleted your Spanish version of your post because this is AN ENGLISH FORUM! There is a Spanish forum on the site... and you are welcome to post URUGUAY related messages in Spanish there.

I deleted your link because it is not at all relevant to Uruguay. I don't think you message is either, but for the moment will give you the benefit of the doubt. I suspect it is just cut and pasted canned message and not a real attempt to participate.

For example, "We ship worldwide, specializing in Central and South America and the Carribbean Islands.". You mention 3 regions of the world and only one is relevant (and close) to Uruguay.

It is hardly useful to mention either the Caribbean or Central American when trying to market to Uruguay. South America is starting to get the point, but each country is South American is very different.

Shipping worldwide (or to Uruguay) is to one thing. Helping someone get through the importation process is a different thing all together. If you are not just spamming forums, then something more than an expensive international number to call would have seemed in order.

For example, an example of the cost of some tired, the shipping cost, the importation process and costs and how that ends up being a deal for local merchants.

Sorry if this message seems a bit harsh, but the focus of this forum is for Uruguay and particularly people living and visiting here. It's really not for generic announcements.

Thank author of this post/comment"an export question"

Would anyone know what would be the procedures of exporting an antique car from Uruguay to an overseas destination?

Are there laws in place to prevent "autos de colección" being shipped out of the country?

My former Nissan was 9 years old when I bought it second hand. When I decided to take it on a visit to Argentina, I needed to get a very splendid certificate from the Ministry of Culture which confirmed that the car had not been formerly owned by a "Uruguayo of cultural significance" and could thus be taken out of the country.

Whether or not the law would apply to Tio Pepe's rusty old VW I wouldn't like to say :-)

Knowing that Cubans are barred from selling their splendid old vehicles - likely heaps of out dated junk in their opinions - I wondered if Uruguay had something similar. So, it has to be the owner who was of significance and not the vehicle itself? Have I got that right? And that was the ministry of Culture and not that of Transport?

As far as I know the cultural significance applies to former owners of the vehicle rather than to the vehicle itself... thus the Ministry of Culture certificate.

Owning an ancient vehicle here is considered to be a bit of a status symbol and there is a lively local market amongst enthusiasts. Several of my neighbours have Model A and T Fords which they bring out on festival days. A neighbour of mine in La Paz rebuilds ancient vehicles and two years ago I spotted one of his (a 1928 convertible) for sale on e-bay for 42, 000 euros.

One of the reasons why older vehicles command high prices is that the patente (annual vehicle tax) is based on the original price paid for it so the taxes are very low.

Thank author of this post/comment"don't judge a car by its photograph"

I have been following sales on a site called mercadolibre and have seen all sorts of interesting vehicles for sale at seemingly low prices and, in other cases, right off the chart prices. It's hard to estimate the justice of the asking price by seeing a car on-line.

As well, it would appear a lot of vehicles pior to the 1950s have the steering wheel on the right. Is Uruguay like Sweden who did a switch over after the war?

As far as I know the ROU has always driven on the right hand side of the road. Long ago when the UK used to make and export cars no doubt a few made it down here which might explain the RHDs. Anyway, here in the campo many people seem to prefer the middle of the road rather than one side or the other :-)

Long ago I was nearly killed while driving in the US Virgin Islands. The cars were all US left hand drive models but the islands had a Swedish colonial history and still drove on the left hand side.

Used car prices here are unique in my experience. IMV the best value in old vehicles are the assorted 1960s US pick-up trucks with long extinct brand names like International and Fargo. I'm also fond of the Renault 4s with their curious gear shift arrangements which are still quite common and the Argie built Peugeot 505 estate cars which can seat 7 in comfort.

Patrick

Up to the second world war, Uruguay was driving on the left side of the road. If you are looking any pictures of Montevideo between 1900 until roughly 1945 (mostly under the ''domination'' of UK rules), they were driving on the left side. This is why you can see a lot of cars with the steering wheel on the right side like Chevrolet, Fiat, Ford, etc...

Please enjoy a drive from a tramway back in 1929. As you can see, drivers did not change a lot since 1929...crazy driving. Also, check around 4 minutes for a poor guy ;)

What an excellent bit of film... many thanks. It must have been down to British influence. I wouldn't have wanted to be driving on the day they changed over :-)

Message for Bik of Montreal

I attached a link to a seller of ''coches antiguos''. If you send an email to them, they may give you some details (better to send the message in spanish).

Not sure if exportation of old cars is working and what is the price. Rules for selling cars are a little bit strange with the way of how the Intendencia apply the ''patente'' in URY.

Thanks Tolosa31 for the link. It appears to be a gateway to a lot of other info.

The video of 8 Octubre in 1929 is interesting. Not many cars on such a broad avenue, more bycicles than I saw when there in February and March and the surface of the street looks like any in Montréal after a hard winter.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 97760613
