land cultivation

Thank author of this post/commentif you had 10 hectares of land in near Atlantida, what would you do with it to create income?

It rather depends on the land and on your personal preferences.

I cultivate about 10 hectares. In summer I grow either soya, maize or sorghum. Once these are harvested, I usually grow a crop of winter wheat during the winter and following spring.

With the good Russian wheat harvest and the lower wheat prices this year I haven't planted wheat this winter. Instead I've been doing some subsoiling works in an effort to improve the drainage.

I've also planted 1, 000 eucalyptus trees on 1 hectare to provide myself with a supply of fire wood. There is a good local market for any excess production either as fire wood or as wood pulp here in Colonia.

If you are keen on the idea of self sufficiency, our climate makes it a much more practical proposition than in the far northern latitudes.

thanks Patrick for you response. the question was posed in order to get a feel of what kinds of crops are possible in the area. I also am not a farmer, so I have no idea what 10 hectares has potential for to be economically feasible. A crop I have interest in is hemp, but have no clue on its marketability or legality for that matter.

Thank author of this post/comment"Hemp growing"

The growing of hemp was legalised here a short while ago but as far as I know, its just grown as a green fertilizer precursor crop for potatoes thus far. We lack the necessary processing industries for extracting fibres or for handling the white pith for absorbent horse bedding and the manufacture of high quality paper but this may change over time.

A few years ago I was tempted to plant a few hectares of olives but the lack of local processing capacity dissuaded me.

In these parts we have a number of reliable agricultural contractors. I have my own tractor and basic tackle (sprayer, grass whacker and offset disk harrow) but with only 30 acres, I cannot justify expensive items like a combine harvester or a precision direct drill seeder... which is where the contractors come in.

Thank author of this post/comment"Why Atlantida?"

I think the above relates very good to all farmland areas of Uruguay.

For Atlantida, specially, you might consider construction a commune/cult for paranoid Americans. You could really rake in the cash.

If you are looking for the largest numbers of wealthier paranoid people, I'd reckon it would pay best to look north rather than south :-)

Hi. I am a well seasoned spice trader and we are thinking of relocating to Uruguay to farm a small crop of spices for my markets.

Does anyone know if chilli or paprika are suited to the Uruguayan climate and soils?

Thank author of this post/comment"Chillis"

I've grown a couple of small crops of extra hot chillis for myself and they seem to grow well here. However, you cannot give away (let alone sell) chillis here as local tastes tend towards extreme blandness.

I am also curious as to what grows well in Uruguay. I would love to live on a small plot of land and grow some fruits and veggies, maybe keep a horse or two... what type of produce typically grows well in Colonia and surrounding area?

Lauralee, There is great land in Uruguay and its reasonable, I would be within 30 miles of punta del este and bring my produce there to sell. in season its upscale and wealthy residents will appreciate Organico food. seriously. id start my own Organic farm market or farm stand there . so you could live off your food, and make some cash as well. on facebook my farm is Hawks wing farm- friend me. This is my plan when i move to Uruguay within 2 years, create upscale organic farmstores and recruit farmers to grow organically- apples grow there , strawberries- and all veggies . billy

Thanks, Billy, for the info - very interesting! We are probably moving to Uruguay as soon as mid-December and will rent at first, then look for land to purchase and build on. I will keep your 30 miles from Punta Del Esta suggestion in mind and I love the idea of apples and strawberries! I have never been to Uruguay or South America, so this will be an adventure. Take care, Laura

Thank author of this post/comment"Expat Organic Farmer"

I ran into this post (linked before) in the Panama Forum about some expats that are doing some organic farming and distributing the produce. It seems a lot talk about this kind of activity, but find people actually doing it is a bit more difficult.

Glen, you aint just whistlin dixie.

lots of talk and not a lot of walk.

i like the idea of a small eco community that practices and demonstrates a sustainable lifestyle. the idea being that a self organized community can not only sustain but give back.

the concept of making your own power, water, food and housing seems, to most, just a fantasy. self governing, self organized collectives seem to be .. not needed in uruguay? which is great! a testament to contentment.

however i feel it is a responsibility to explore this low impact lifestyle.. everywhere.

why not help the concept of small self sustaining communities evolve? and when the concept evolves into a physical community.. well let it be self evident... lets build something first then we can judge or be judged.

this isnt a new concept this is actually where we came from and what we, at a certain age, realize was the right way to live.

if you know anything about commercial farming-- you probably know it aint about making money.. thats not why most farmers farm.

there is a great void in our current existence that can be filled. i think this healing/growing process starts with a garden.

metaphorically uruguay is as fertile as any place can be. there is love and beauty and honor in the people. there is a lack of violence and a strong tradition of tolerance/acceptance. from what i can glean- there seems to be uncomfortable people who are expats expecting the comforts of life in their homeland. these people might be running from something and trying to rebuild the very thing they run from.

im coming to walk my talk. i feel like i am running TO something.. toward a community that allows community LOL

i hope that once i learn some language skills that i might find a few more "kooks like me" in the neighborhood.

i would be very interested to hear what anyone may have to say about building an eco community in uruguay.

i would be ecstatic to hear from those who are involved in the internal work of consciousness and self development that goes hand in hand with harmonious lifestyles. i know there are 2 conscious cousins in the country. there must be more !

thank you and have a pleasant tomorrow

Thank author of this post/comment"getting things done"

Glen,

Thanks for the encouragement.

I think they key to getting things done is to first get ourselves UNdone.

I feel that its imperative to first unplug from the "machine". Cancel your TV subscriptions, learn to live debt free, quit your lucrative career, learn to live completely off-grid, get rid of all the toys and trappings that come with a frivolous life, find meaning in your relationship to the planet and all life on it, turn you back on money..etc etc..

in doing these things, in emptying your life of "stuff", one can not only see what its all about but one can enjoy a whole new existence that we really are meant to live.

there is a whole nother kind of reward that comes with self sufficiency and harmonious living... The thing is that untill you see where you are and then do a "180" it cannot be explained or shown to you. so cmon, Glen, jump in and see for yourself.

talk is truly cheap in that one cannot understand or "know" anything until one finds their own understanding.. to do that one must abandon what theyve been "told" and all the cheap, false talk theyve come to believe and actually EXPLORE a life outside of money and status and success as theyve come to understand it.

another trick is to stop living outside of our own lives. if we're busy living someone elses life and reinforcing our own superiority through others failure.. well who is living OUR life then? become resposible to ourselves and we become responsible to humanity.

there is nothing that myself or anyone else can do to explain what others COULD find in themselves and through themselves.. we all have to have the boldness and courage to turn that 180 and find out who we really are and what "reality" truly is. it all starts with unplugging..

i walk my talk... i know what my hands and the mother earth can do when we are aligned.. now my job is to demonstrate my arts for others to be encouraged...

i have a forum that discusses things such as this.. not money or success but consciousness. you are welcome to unplug and come on in.

i am also happy to share my experience in offgrid self sufficiency on the www however it would be even better if anyone REALLY wants to understand-- to come visit and actually put their hands in the mud and form the bricks that will build our future as a species.. i call it humanity 2.0.

these topics are what has brought me to your board. i am about to build (again) and ROU seems to be where the universe is leading me.

going offgrid and being self efficient to the point that you have excess enough to give back to the community/planet is not something that you want to just go do... its a lifestyle and philosophy maybe and it never ends. once youre in tune.. you "do" every day. if you havent started yet then simply ask yourself what you DONT do every day and there will be, illuminated before you, the first steps of YOUR personal path.

the best way to find all of this is to put you ego aside, bear the tinge of pain and humility it takes to get started and take that one tiny step. after that the energy and drive to continue on the newfound path will be self perpetuating.

there are people who come to this board who are conscious and aware and celebrate others. they may be longtime members or they may drop in with one post and never return but they travel here. those people are treasure. those people are precious and can be heard or can be here to listen. the question is-- are we listening?

so dont assume i have or have not been on my path for days or several lifetimes.. or that im just fantasizing about doing something someday.. celebrate the fact that we are here together.

if someone comes here with a fantasy then they have already moved one step closer to something.. there is no finish line only a starting gate. congratulate everyone-- and often.

celebrate the idea that we are all here using our energy and time to progress, move forward and improve.

celebrate the fact that you are here interacting and therefore already in the right place to evolve and grow... thats what im doing right now, celebrating you, us, this forum and all the forward movement and personal development that springs from it.
