| Expat Meeting in Atlantida More and more people are discovering the beautiful little seaside town of Atlantida and the expat community is growing slowly but steadily. As such a few people have got together and started a bi-monthly expat meeting. Only one has happened so far but the turn out was very promising! It will take place at noon on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month at Don Vito Restaurante in Atlantida. It is open to all so don't be shy, bring a friend, bring family, everyone is welcome! |
| The Atlantida ex pat (English speakers)meeting has changed its meeting time to 1 p.m. the first and third THURSDAYS of the month beginning September 3, 2009. Meeting place will continue to be at the Don Vito restaurant. Anyone interested in coming to our meetings or relocating to beautiful, relaxed Atlantida, is welcome to contact me at Katherinehine@yahoo.com. |
| I hope your next meeting goes well, I think its great when then expat community can be of some support to each other and welcome new arrivals....good luck with it! |
| "Enchanted to find Friends so close"
My wife and I are currently living in Parque del Plata and plan to attend the meeting on Nov 19 if we're in town. What a great thing to have a group that gets together from time to time. I've been speaking about 100% Spanish for the past month and a half. Hope I haven't forgotten too awfully much. Chao, |
| "Atlantida meetings are great"
Jane and I recently attended the Atlantida expat meeting. We were impressed with the help and info we got from the meeting. Everyone contributed in answering the questions we asked. Marcela is wonderful to talk to and can find answers to about any question you have. If you are in the area, you would be foolish not to attend. Hats off to Katherine for getting it started. We will return. |
| "Meeting in Atlantida"
Yes, congratulations are definitely in order to Katherine and Marcela. Over the past year or more I've noticed that the interest in places along the east coast such as Piriapolis, Atlantida, and smaller beach towns has really grown and there are an increasing number of people seeking information about these spots. Its hard to tell people about a place you've never lived so it is great to see Katherine and Marcela helping people out and answering questions. Keep up the good work! |
| "Participation"
It would be great to have Katherine and Marcela participate here more. The posts in this thread are a bit dated, and an occasional update on their meetings would be a great benefit for the members here.Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Disappointed"
I went to that Atlantida expat meeting a while back and was extremely disappointed. I anticipated finding a group of expats actively building sustainable communities and sharing tips on organic farming and sourcing supplies in Uruguay.Instead it was more like a group of discontent paranoids worried about chemtrails, US politics and the new world order. The only conversations I heard about Uruguay were all negative toward the issues of doing business. Is there another group more focused on going off grid, and developing something significant? |

I don't know many recently arrived ex-pat farmers down here but the few I do know all farm conventionally rather than using organic methods. Most of my farming neighbours are immigrants but came over here during the 1940s/50s.I lost lots of money trying to grow organic soya for two summers running so now I grow GM varieties which can resist my modest applications of 2-4-5-T and produce more than 2 tonnes/ha instead of no harvestable soya and jungles of thistles and tares :-) I have great respect for people who can manage to grow field crops organically (especially here with our amazingly broad selection of weeds, fungi and pests) but it involves a lot of hard work and a great deal of manual labour. IMV its MUCH easier to just sit around talking about it :-) |
| "Update"
Hello, just to keep this thread up to date:The Expat meetings are still held twice a month at 1pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at the Don Vito's restaurant in Atlantida (not far from the Cambio office). A member just recently suggested that on months with 5 Thursdays we get together on the 5th Thursday in another location (last time it was in the hotel Piroska). To know where the 5th meeting is held, I suggest you ask here or write an email to Katherine. I'll try to post a message here when I get the info. I'm interested in meeting other families with children (eventually I'd love to hold an English speaking children's playgroup somewhere in the area of Atlantida), so contact me if you are interested. |
| "Playgroup"
Hi Brittany, I live in Parque del Plata and have two young children. I would also be interested in a playgroup for english speaker children so if you are still keen do get in touch. I don't attend the expat mtgs at Don Vito so do contact me on here or I believe I have also sent you a private msg. Thanks, Tina |
